Hilux D4D 1KD-FTV Turbo Actuator Stepper Motor Problems
Best Stepper Motor Replacement Solution
The Toyota D-4D Hilux, Landcruiser Prado and Hiace Van/Bus run a turbocharger with variable vanes that are electronically actuated.
Instead of a dump valve and pneumatic wastegate control via actuator, there is an Electronic Stepper Motor / Actuator attached to the side of the turbo.
This ‘motor’ controls boost by changing the angle of vanes inside the turbo.
And here is a fact that not many are aware of:
It is a separate component to the turbocharger itself, and as such it can be replaced independently.
This makes Hilux D4D 1KD-FTV Turbo Actuator Stepper Motor Problems easier to deal with.
Because if it’s just the stepper or turbo at fault – just replace the faulty part!
A quick check for Hilux Stepper Motor Problems
As a quick check for component at fault, look for a physical problem with the turbocharger.
That could be movement in the turbine / compressor to indicate wear, with a squealing noise as a result, or leaking oil etc.
And the vehicle’s computer may force limp mode, and /or engine warning light comes on. In such cases often you cant rev the engine above 1500 rpm as a result.
Or there is a more general problem with boosting it MAY be due to a fault in the Stepper Motor only.
In the absence of physical symptoms as described above, it is more likely to be the stepper motor faulting.
As such, it would be a good idea to have the vehicle scanned to check if a fault code for the Stepper / Actuator shows up.
You might end up with a code similar to this: P1251 (34) – Turbocharger stepper motor circuit (intermittent)
If so, you will be better off replacing just the component that is faulting.
Just Hilux D4D 1KD-FTV Turbo Actuator Stepper Motor Problems?
Why pay for an entire new turbo if all you need is to replace the stepper?
Up until now, it was only sold as a complete unit – both actuator and turbo together.
This was very expensive and unnecessary, as often it was EITHER the turbocharger OR the stepper motor that were faulty, hardly ever both units at once.
Get a faster solution (no need to remove the entire turbo from the vehicle) AND save several thousand dollars by purchasing and replacing JUST the Stepper!.
