Hilux D4D 1KD-FTV Turbocharger Actuator Stepper Motor Problems & Solutions

Hilux D4D 1KD-FTV Turbocharger Actuator Stepper Motor Problems

Best Turbocharger Stepper Motor Replacement Solution

The Toyota D-4D Hilux, Land Cruiser Prado and Hiace Van/Bus run a turbocharger with variable vanes (VNT Technology) that are electronically actuated.

toyota-hilux-hiace-d4d-1kd-turbo-actuator-stepper-problems-solutions

Instead of a dump valve and pneumatic wastegate control via actuator, there is an Electronic Stepper Motor / Actuator attached to the side of the turbo.
This ‘motor’ controls boost by changing the angle of vanes inside the turbo.
And here is a fact that not many are aware of:
It is a separate component to the turbocharger itself, so can be replaced independently.
This makes Hilux D4D 1KD-FTV Turbocharger Actuator Stepper Motor problems easier to deal with.
Because if it’s just the stepper or turbo at fault – just replace the faulty part!

A quick check: Hilux Stepper Motor Problems:

For component fault-finding, look for a physical problem with the turbocharger.
It could be excessive movement in the compressor / impeller wheel indicating wear(usually with a squealing noise), or leaking oil.
Additionally, the vehicle’s computer may force limp mode, and /or the engine warning light will illuminate.
If so, you may find you can’t rev the engine above 1500 rpm.
Or if there is a more general boost problem, it may be a fault with the Turbocharger Actuator Stepper Motor only.

In the absence of the physical symptoms described above, it is more likely to be a stepper motor fault only.
In such circumstances, have the ECU scanned, and look for a fault code associated with the Stepper / Actuator.
You might end up with a code similar to this: P1251(34)-Turbo stepper motor circuit(intermittent).

If so, you will be better off replacing just the component that is faulting.
So if it’s just a Hilux D4D 1KD-FTV Turbocharger Actuator Stepper Motor problem, why pay for an entire new turbo?
Just replace the Stepper Motor!

Until now, the Turbocharger Actuator Stepper Motor was only sold as a complete unit – both actuator and turbo together.
This is very expensive and unnecessary, as usually it is EITHER the turbocharger, OR the stepper motor that are at faulty, rarely do both units fault at once.

Get a faster solution (no need to remove the entire turbocharger) AND save several thousand dollars by purchasing and replacing JUST the Stepper!.

Hilux D4D 1KD-FTV Turbocharger Actuator Stepper Motor Replacement:
