Landcruiser 200 Series V8 1VD-FTV Turbo Actuator Stepper Motor Problems and Solutions

Landcruiser 200 Series V8 1VD-FTV Turbo Actuator Stepper Motor Problems

Best Stepper Motor Replacement Solution

The Toyota V8 200 Series Landcruisers run Left side and Right side turbochargers with variable vane / geometry managed electronically.
There is no ‘dump’ valve with a vacuum or pneumatic wastegate controller, a stepper motor or electric actuator does the job instead.
The ‘motor’ changes vane angles inside the turbo to effect boost control.

This Stepper is a separate component from the turbochargers and can be replaced without replacing the entire turbo.

In general if no physical problem or symptom is apparent in the turbo such as no movement in the wheel indicating wear (high pitch noise as a result) or oil leaks, or there is a general boosting issue, it MAY be a faultly Stepper Motor causing the problem. Often this is associated with the computer forcing limp mode, and /or warning lamp for ‘engine’ comes on. In such case rev range may be limited to below 1500 rpm as a result.

At such times, its a good idea to scan the vehicle with a scan tool to see if a code for the Stepper / Actuator fault appears.
A typical code looks something like this: P1251(34)-Turbo stepper motor circuit(intermittent).

If it’s confirmed as a Stepper Motor issue, you will should just replace the faulty component.
It is most often the turbocharger or just the stepper motor faulting.
It does’nt make sense to pay for an entirely new turbocharger if just the electronic stepper needs replacing.

In the recent past, you were only able to purchase complete turbo units with actuator attached.
This is expensive and no longer required.

Below is a quick solution (entire turbo can remain on the vehicle) AND a solution that can save several thousand dollars!
Purchase and replace the stepper only!
